New York's School of Visual Arts has taken a hit from the broader higher education crisis in the U.S., with enrollment down 34%.

The school has also seen enrollment decline by 34% since 2019 (its highest ever), a situation many higher education institutions are facing partly due to the “demographic cliff” created by the drop in U.S. birth rates seen at the start of the Great Recession in 2007-2008. This situation has been aggravated by “the ongoing dismantling of education and the arts by the federal government, and an onslaught of threats to immigration policies that directly affect our international students,” Cyphers wrote. Many U.S. art schools rely heavily on international students — in a 2025 report, this group made up close to 50% of SVA’s student body.
Deborah Obalil, President & Executive Director of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD), told ARTnews in an interview: “About two-thirds of our membership [almost 40 schools in the U.S. and Canada] have seen declining enrollment. Very few schools are back to 2019 enrollment numbers. Many independent colleges of art and design have gone through some round of restructuring or layoffs, some of them multiple.” Some schools have closed altogether in recent years, including the San Francisco Art Institute (acquired by University of San Francisco in 2022), the University of the Arts in Philadelphia (2024) and soon, the California College of Arts in S.F., which will shutter next year.
The School of Visual Arts is consistently among the top-ranked colleges in the U.S. for animation students, posted at No. 5 on this year’s Animation Career Review chart (among the top 3% of colleges considered by prospective students). According to its ACR entry, SVA’s Animation Department serves nearly 800 students. Overall enrollment at the school in Fall 2025 was 3,425 students (2,856 full time), with the top majors listed as Illustration (27.7%), Design (17%) and Animation (14.5%).
Per the listing:
The Animation Department at School of Visual Arts (SVA) is one of the nation’s largest.
