Animation Magazine. “I bought the book and was moved to tears not just by Aaron’s stunningly beautiful art, but also by the author Marcie Colleen’s poignant poetry. As a native NYer who worked across from the Word Trader Center, the events of 9/11 hit me deeply. This inspiring tale of resilience and hope had all the making for a stunning short film adaptation, so I bought the rights and brought on my friends at Six Point Harness to help develop and produce it.”
The ‘Survivor Tree’ team includes, from left, Eddie Gamarra, Brendan Burch and Aaron Becker. To help fund the project, Gamarra has partnered with The Gotham Film & Media Institute to allow donors to make tax-deductible, charitable contributions to the short. “We have raised almost $30K so far and have be able to make a animatic that really lands emotionally,” he says. “We’re seeking donations to help complete the project for next 9/11. The goal is to create something artistically stunning, emotionally evocative, culturally relevant, and of educational value. There is a whole generation of kids and families that don’t really know what happened that fateful day and Survivor Tree is a powerful entry point to learning more.”
Gamarra, who heads up boutique literary agency Gamarra Media and handles sale of stories and building brands across publishing and entertainment, was previously VP of literary affairs at Paramount’s Nickelodeon & Awesomeness brands. He was also a literary manager and producer at The Gotham Group.
“The story is timeless and the emotions are universal,” adds Gamarra. “The short, like the book, is meant for anyone who needs a glimmer of hope, a dot of inspiration, and a dash of resilience. There is very little material out there for kids and families about 9/11, and what is out there is very difficult to handle. I wanted to create something that could counteract the endless recycled images of the planes hitting the towers or the dazed faces of dust-coated locals. The book is a perfect piece to start with and the short will expand the healing to a global audience.”
Six Point Harness CEO'su Brendan Burch şöyle diyor: "11 Eylül'ün ders kitaplarındaki bir randevu haline gelmesine asla izin veremeyiz. The Survivor Tree and its offspring, planted at sites across the country, are living reminders of that world changing day and an animated short as beautiful as the book it’s based on gives us a way to remind future generations who’ll one day be the ones telling this story.”
In order to finish the project, which he has been self-financing, Gamarra is raising $100K to complete the production in time for Sept. 11, 2027. The funds raised will also cover costs such as editorial, sound & music, and festival costs. Every contributor will have their name on screen in the end credits. Donors who give more than $500 will also receive a copy of the book signed by the author and illustrator as a thank-you gift for their generous contribution.
